Build Request: Eldar using IA11

Email:

Stelek,

Can you build me a list for my Eldar using stuff from IA11 please?! You seem to be amenable to some of it where in the past you were opposed to it. Can you explain why? Also, tactics for the new stuff in the old lists? I’m not that famiilar with the new kit.

Thanks,
Seraph

Sure I can do that.

As it currently stands, Eldar are dead as a Codex and have been for years. Is it unfair to grant them permission to use FW stuff in 40k and deny it to others? I suppose it is, but when your other armies function and Eldar do not, I have a hard time feeling bad about it.

Tactics are fairly simple really. Hornets with double EML are Typhoons. Warp Hunters are there so you don’t need to take the expensive lances, which are terribly overcosted in the Eldar Codex due to the presence of Land Raiders. No Land Raiders? They’d not cost 45 points. Sadly, since Land Raiders are themselves crap, this is a vicious design cycle GW has yet to break free from.

This list varies a little bit from the norm, as it only has 5 troops. Normally the points saved by not wasting expenditures on the FA slot goes into that 6th troop choice. As FA is viable with the introduction of the Hornet, can’t do that anymore. At some point, Wave Serpents won’t cost 90 base points for what they offer. Either you’ll get better weapons (twin-linked chin weapons), BS4, much cheaper weapons and options, or there will be some other compelling reason to bring skimmers in 6th edition.

Here goes:

2000 Pts – Eldar Roster

1 Farseer, 100 pts ( Fortune ; Runes of Warding)

5 Fire Dragons, 180 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Fire Dragons, 180 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Fire Dragons, 180 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Dire Avengers, 160 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Dire Avengers, 160 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Dire Avengers, 160 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Dire Avengers, 160 pts
1 Wave Serpent (TL Shuriken Cannons)

5 Dire Avengers, 60 pts

1 Hornet (IA), 85 pts (Star Engines; Scatter Laser x2)

1 Hornet (IA), 95 pts (Star Engines; Missile Launcher x2)

1 Hornet (IA), 95 pts (Star Engines; Missile Launcher x2)

1 Warp Hunter (IA), 125 pts (Unit Type: Vehicle (Skimmer, Tank, Fast); D-Cannon (Warp Hunter))

1 Warp Hunter (IA), 125 pts (Unit Type: Vehicle (Skimmer, Tank, Fast); D-Cannon (Warp Hunter))

1 Falcon, 135 pts (Missile Launcher)

Total Roster Cost: 2000

Notes: Dismounted DA unit goes in the Falcon.

EML Hornets, Falcon, and Scatter Laser Hornet focus fire to remove infantry (like Long Fangs) or try and bring down lead vehicles.

The FD Serpents go 24″ towards the enemy, while the DA Serpents move up behind them 12″ to get cover and fire their guns at whatever targets present themselves while disembarking the troops into cover in midfield. Note I’ve removed the chin weapons as the primary use of these tanks after turn 1 is to go fast and ram the enemy.

The Warp Hunters should be behind the pack of DA Serpents so they get cover saves but are still able to fire. Take note that firing near your FD units is incredibly dangerous, so fire at rear elements of the opponent’s army even if that means they get cover saves.

If you can get the Warp Hunters up close, they will likely die after you do this…but the flamer template frying infantry and also frying a tank, is all kinds of fun.

At any rate, running Hornets is easy–magnetize some EML onto the undersides of your Vyper wings and take the turret off. The Warp Hunter…well, I’m sure someone can figure something out lol.

Any questions?

Not sure I undersand the star engines on the hornets.

Stelek, you commented on my IA2 list in the forums, is thisone significantly better?

For 20 more points you could get dual pulse lasers on the hornets.

I’ll make another comment with my list. It has almost the exact same choices but I feel mine is a bit more optimized.

  • Stelek

They come with them, or AB fucked up.

Pretty sure they come with them.

Perhaps they do. Just be careful because my hornets came out to be 10 points cheaper in AB than in IA2.

My list has str 8+ and ap 2 or better in every slot except troops. It also has a robust reserve ability.

I realize that the loss of 3 serpents decreases my defensive capabilities but my offensive capability is huge. Also, all of my guns are BS4 or TL. I can also move 12″ with my vehicles and fire everything.

  • zob

They come with warp engines and they are 65 points base.

  • Stelek

Thatguy, if you want to be a glass cannon, there’s an army for that. Dark Eldar. Eldar don’t do that, nor should they try.

  • WLS

More interesting question, imo: how about the Corsair list?

  • goofycommy

Stelek, why did your opinion change on the warp hunter. Previously you said it was bad. http://yesthetruthhurts.com/2011/01/unit-review-the-warp-hunter/

Did you change your mind because it switched from a small blast marker to a large blast marker? That’s the only thing I see that changed from “unofficial” to “official” version.

  • Whats His Name

I am curious about the fortune and the bare bones falcon instead of just another serpent? care to explain? cheers

  • Stelek

Goofy, correct. You can put that down and hit 3 tanks at once, hole or not…it’s a poisoned hit on multiple tanks. Yes please, can I haz more?

  • Stelek

Whats: The Falcon gives you some S8 shots from the back, that’s all–and for less than a Serpent. If you want to move 12″, you can fire everything at an infantry unit.

  • Thatguyoverthere

The only thing that changed in my list is that I dropped 2 serpents to make them jetbike squads, changed a falcon into a warp hunter and changed the farseer into a pair of autarchs with melta guns.

Really, my list is almost exactly the same except I have 6 less str 6 shots and 2 less hulls.

In exchange I get 12 pulse laser shots and an additional warp hunter template.

  • Thatguyoverthere

Dark Eldar can’t out-glass cannon this list! Haha

Really, what could a DE player hope to do against this list? If he spreads out, I come on from reserves out of his range. If he clusters up I nail him with warp hunter templates.

  • Stelek

Except your Pulse Laser shots are obvious targets.

3 of your troops are easily destroyed.

If you aren’t sure what a DE player would do to this, I don’t know what to say really.

Thing is, comparing the lists that way (versus) wasn’t the concept. The concept was: Dark Eldar do this better.

  • DinoDoc

Out of curiosity, what’s your opinion of the Corsair list?

  • Stelek

I’ll look at posting something on it later.
